Hyderabad: Telangana CM Revanth Reddy has encouraged civil service officials to adopt a proactive and citizen-friendly attitude towards solving the problems of the people. He made it clear that hardworking officers who strive for the welfare of the people whose income is below the poverty threshold and downtrodden will earn an eternal legacy in society.
Speaking at the office of IAS Officers’ Association, while inaugurating Life of a Karma Yogi by ex-IAS officer M. Gopalakrishna, Revanth Reddy highlighted how the role of bureaucrats has altered. He spoke of how earlier decades saw people-oriented IAS officers and thereby political leaders becoming less recognizable in comparison. But he expressed concern that there are bureaucrats now who would prefer to stay in the safety of their air-conditioned chambers than engage in direct interaction with the people. He requested district collectors and SPs to roam around their districts proactively, emphasizing that effective governance is actually practiced on the ground and not behind doors.
The Chief Minister called for the civil services to change, affirming that responsible and committed officers will always stand out to be known for what they accomplish. He added the importance of their central role in examination and application of political choices with adherence to administrative protocol and governance conventions. He warned against defaulting on such tasks leading to harm in society in the long run.
Show respect to legendary bureaucrats, Revanth Reddy said, praising Shankaran for his hard work, T.N. Seshan for election transparency, and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for playing a key role in India’s economic reforms. He asked the young officers to look up to such individuals.
Discussing Life of a Karma Yogi, he described the book as a rare treasure trove of half a century of experience, stressing that while material wealth can be purchased, experience cannot be substituted. He valued M. Gopalakrishna’s insights on India’s economic transformation, from Jawaharlal Nehru’s socialist strategies to the present regime under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The function was attended by Chief Secretary Shanti Kumari, Association Vice President and Special Chief Secretary of Finance K. Ramakrishna Rao, and several senior IAS, IPS, and IFS officers. Their attendance reflected the significance of dedicated civil service in shaping governance and improving public welfare in Telangana.
