While releasing a statue in Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy vigorously spoke on education as a contemporary concern, constitutional value, and federalism. Assuring the public present before him, he accentuated and pointed out the upliftment of the entire educational spectrum to save the principles of the Constitution at the same time so as not to vitiate the basic rights of the state by sheer centralization.
Education as Social Responsibility
Revanth Reddy stressed that the original aim of Dr. BR Ambedkar Open University was to serve a social purpose in broader dimensions rather than just to issue certificates. He gave full credit to former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao for his efforts toward promoting university education as a social responsibility and insisted that universities should be catalysts to solve problems in society.
Reaffirming accessible education as one of the most important factors, he stated that no ruler has the power to deprive citizens of their right to education. His government, he asserted, has focused on revitalizing the dormant education system in Telangana. Measures have been taken to strengthen universities, including appointing VCs who share the aspirations of the people of this state. He proudly announced the appointment of a Dalit academician as the VC of Osmania University after two decades, signaling a step toward greater inclusion.
Strengthening Universities for the Future
VCs have been given the task of preparing ten-year development plans, and the government promised to take full responsibility for the implementation of those plans. He stressed the need to fill teaching and non-teaching positions in universities to address faculty shortages. He also warned against the privatization of universities, terming it harmful to the state’s education sector and overall societal progress.
“Universities are credited with producing luminaries like PV Narasimha Rao and Jaipal Reddy,” he said, adding that their legacy must be preserved. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to Ambedkar’s vision of ensuring welfare initiatives reach the poorest and most marginalized.
